Steve Thompson Bursaries

From our earliest Writing Room days back in 2013, we have wanted to welcome creative writers onto our courses regardless of their ability to pay.

Our wonderful patron, Steve Thompson, has helped to make this possible and there is now a Steve Thompson Bursary place on each course we run.

We do try to keep our course fees as affordable as possible. However, if you feel unable to sign up to a place because you’re worried about covering the cost, we'd like to help you if we can. We will treat your information in total confidence. We offer part bursaries and full bursaries. If you are working with us as a bursary student and the courses are suiting you, there's every chance that you'll be able to study with us over several courses.

APPLYING FOR A BURSARY PLACE

We do have more applicants than we have places. You'll be invited to a short chat on Zoom with Programme Director Kate Pemberton. The aim of this chat is to find out a bit about you and why a course would be helpful to you at this stage. We'll also be checking on things like ability to learn to use Zoom, if you don't already use it, and we'll be looking at aspects like time keeping and communication skills, as these make for a course which runs smoothly for all. We'll want to hear about the sort of writing you're interested in, and which of our courses you'd like to attend.

Please contact kate@writingroom.org.uk to start the process of applying for a place.

A word from our Patron, Steve Thompson

I joined Giovanna’s Journalism course in November 2014 while looking after my young son Archie. I wanted to develop my writing skills and meet some new people outside of the new parent bubble. Gio’s enthusiasm and expertise were inspiring and are typical of the team at Writing Room. But for a friend asking me to help grow their software startup, I would have carried on developing my writing over the past few years. However, the positive impact on my self-confidence and curiosity never left me and I was delighted to be able to re-engage with Kate and take on a role as a patron to help support the amazingly creative environment Writing Room provides. My academic roots are in economics and mathematics and my professional roots are in financial analysis, with a sideline in property renovation.
